A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national projects.
