Comeback Daniil Medvedev Secures Maiden Championship in Over Two Years

19 of the Russian's twenty-one titles have been achieved on hardcourt

A comeback Daniil Medvedev won his initial championship for 882 days with victory over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open title decider.

The Russian, a ex- world number one, has endured a torrid season, achieving just one win at the Grand Slams and suffering a meltdown at the American major.

His unpredictability on the ATP Tour - and struggles with his serve in especial - caused him dropping out of the world's top 10 and finally parting ways with former trainer Gilles Cervara.

Currently training with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, the tennis star has steadily progressed in the recent weeks - peaking in a tightly fought three-set win over Frenchman Corentin Moutet.

This marks Medvedev's initial trophy after the Italian tournament and first on a hardcourt after that period of that year.

Victory also means the Russian has secured 21 titles at 21 distinct events.

"It's the first time I am participating in a tournament with my children at once, so to get a trophy is really nice," said ranked player Medvedev.

"This title is in dedication of my second daughter my daughter, because the first title I won when my first daughter my daughter was delivered was for her."

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his past six finals, including in Halle earlier this year.

His defensive approach and recurring reactions on the playing surface had led commentators to doubt if his ability to play at the highest level was finished.

However the athlete has altered his approach in the past month, striving to approach the net and perform assertively, supported by an enhanced service.

Medvedev fought back from a disadvantage in the first set against the challenging opponent, securing 4 of the concluding five exchanges to go ahead.

Both players swapped service breaks in the middle set before the Frenchman, striving for his maiden ATP Tour victory, gained dominance to push for a final set.

The opponent rescued four initial opportunities in a tight final set before the champion secured a break to fifteen to secure the win.

Suitably, he secured victory with a rally at the net, with Moutet incapable to handle a shot after two hours and 38 minutes.
